Thank goodness he’s a very stable genius

Thank goodness he’s a very stable genius

by digby

Recall what he said about himself that very first day when he went to the CIA and bragged about himself in front of the wall representing all the fallen agents:

I’m a person that very strongly believes in academics.  In fact, every time I say I had an uncle who was a great professor at MIT for 35 years who did a fantastic job in so many different ways, academically — was an academic genius — and then they say, is Donald Trump an intellectual?  Trust me. I’m, like, a smart person.

Here’s what he said about Iraq too:

When I was young — and I think we’re all sort of young.  When I was young, we were always winning things in this country.  We’d win with trade.  We’d win with wars.  At a certain age, I remember hearing from one of my instructors, “The United States has never lost a war.”  And then, after that, it’s like we haven’t won anything.  We don’t win anymore.  The old expression, “to the victor belong the spoils” — you remember.  I always used to say, keep the oil.  I wasn’t a fan of Iraq.  I didn’t want to go into Iraq.  But I will tell you, when we were in, we got out wrong.  And I always said, in addition to that, keep the oil.  Now, I said it for economic reasons.  But if you think about it, Mike, if we kept the oil you probably wouldn’t have ISIS because that’s where they made their money in the first place.  So we should have kept the oil.  But okay.  (Laughter.)  Maybe you’ll have another chance.  But the fact is, should have kept the oil.

I would guess that at the time there were plenty of people who thought, “sure he’s a total idiot but he’ll have reasonable people around him. They won’t let him go too far, right?”

Well:

Presidents on the brink of war tend to rely on an array of Oval Office assets: teams of experienced advisers, trusted sources of intelligence, strong ties with U.S. allies and credibility with the broad American public. President Trump may be in short supply across nearly all those categories as he faces the prospect of an escalating conflict with Iran.

Trump’s decision to approve an airstrike that killed Qasem Soleimani, the leader of Iran’s paramilitary Quds Force, came at a moment in his presidency when his national security team has been depleted by waves of departures and distracted by months of impeachment hearings before Congress.

But even before the Ukraine crisis, Trump had spent much of his first three years in office attacking critical capabilities ordinarily cultivated by commanders in chief: He has disparaged U.S. intelligence agencies, disrupted relationships with European partners and diluted the power of the bully pulpit with thousands of falsehoods.

Trump followers applaud this because they’ve been led to believe that what he did was “drain the swamp” of the “deep state” Democrats who refuse to make America great again.  What he did was drain the government of anyone who isn’t a total sycophant, braindead fool or soulless hack.

The ‘best and the brightest” have often gotten things wrong. But damn, putting the worst and the dullest in charge really isn’t an improvement.

They yearn to be subjects

They yearn to be subjects

I know there is a lot to keep us up at night already but I feel I have to share this particular nightmare because misery loves company:

In a SurveyMonkey poll for Axios, Republican voters chose children of President Trump — Don Jr. and Ivanka — as two of the top four picks for president in four years.

Don Jr. has emerged as one of the most prominent defenders of his dad, frequently going after the left on Twitter, where he has 4.2 million followers, and serving as a popular warm-up act for presidential rallies.

Ivanka Trump’s work within the administration would be a selling point if she wanted to carry on the Trump legacy.

Don Jr. was the top choice among young voters, while Pence was the clear preference for older voters.

I love the kicker:

For what it’s worth, the survey was conducted right before Trump was impeached.

Lol.

I actually don’t take this too seriously. If Trump wins this year then all bets are off. I’m not even sure we’ll have a country in 2024 so it’s not worth thinking about. But sure, if the right wins again, we could be looking at a Trump monarchy not a dynasty. And Trump really could make his son Baron a baron.

But if he doesn’t win I think the Trump brand will fade quickly among the wingnuts. They hate “losers.” And the political establishment will take itself in hand and carefully explain to everyone that Trump lost because he wasn’t a true conservative. They will be able to finesse the fact that they enabled him all the way, cheerfully exploding the deficit so they have a weapon to use against any Democrat who tries to govern in the future. His voters won’t care because they enabled him too. If he loses in 2020 I predict that by 2024, he will be old news and so will his spawn.

But what do I know?

Greta’s not the one who is brainwashed

Greta’s not the one who is brainwashed

If you read this blog you know that I am a major animal lover.  The stories coming out of Australia are breaking my heart. I have to steer clear of the footage and only read about it because I just can’take it:

It makes me feel crazy (and frankly homicidal) when I hear idiots like this:

Rock musician Meat Loaf thinks Greta Thunberg has been brainwashed into thinking climate change is real.

The singer, 72, said he “feels” for the 17-year-old, whom he thinks has “been forced” into her beliefs.

“I feel for that Greta,” he told Mail Online. “She has been brainwashed into thinking that there is climate change and there isn’t.”

He continued: “She hasn’t done anything wrong, but she’s been forced into thinking that what she is saying is true.”

Meat Loaf’s comments come after global leaders and activists warned the bushfires currently ravaging Australia are an environmental emergency that must be tackled urgently.

Somebody’s been brainwashed but it isn’t Greta Thunberg.

I guess I can at least understand why politicians beholden to the fossil fuel industry pretend like climate change is a hoax. Their salaries depend on it. But why ordinary people are so eager to believe it stuns me. Do they not love their children?

Assassinations and War Crimes 2020

Assassinations and War Crimes 2020

There’s too much going on and it’s hard to focus on anything right now. But I thought that video by David Ignatius about Iran was pretty measured and informative.

You will note that he uses the word “assassination” which has stupidly become a bone of contention and has some Democrats and pundits running around chasing their tales trying to distance themselves from the obvious.

I cannot help but recall the shameless Republicans, led by Trump, rending their garments over Democrats alleged refusal to say the words “radical Islamic terrorism.”

Now they are rending their garments over Democrats using the proper word to describe the planned, targeted killing of a high level political and military leader of another nation. Of course it is an assassination. And part of the reason that previous administrations have not carried out such a thing is because it’s deadly provocative not to mention illegal (not that that would necessarily have stopped them) to do that.

They did it. Now they have to deal with the consequences and one of them is the fact that they have now used the force of the United States government to assassinate an adversary on foreign soil and they are proudly taking credit for it. There’s no going back from that.

And why they are being so delicate about the language is kind of laughable when you have the president of the United States openly threatening to commit war crimes on a massive scale?

From the looks of it, nobody with any influence on the right is stepping up. I assume they love it.

Elizabeth Warren with the right answer

Elizabeth Warren with the right answer

She has the right answers on a lot of things in my opinion but this was just masterful. Jake Tapper tried to trap her on impeachment and she not only explained why she has said he’s guilty but managed to make the Democratic Senate’s case for a real trial at the same time:

TAPPER: Let’s turn to impeachment, because you do want to talk about it apparently. You’ve said you have heard enough evidence to vote to convict president Trump in the senate trial. Take a listen to number two Democrat, your whip, Senator Dick Durbin, on this show, just a couple of weeks ago.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) BASH: Is it a mistake for the senators on both sides of the aisle frankly, to say how they’re going to vote before the trial starts?

DURBIN: I really think it is. I think they’ve gone too far. You know, how can they hold up their hands up and say “I swear impartial justice”? You can’t do that. They shouldn’t have done that.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

TAPPER: That’s the Democratic leader of the senate saying that you and others should not have said that you would vote to convict him. Is he wrong?

WARREN: Look, I have enormous respect for Senator Durbin, but understand this. What I said is enough evidence has been presented and so far Donald Trump has offered absolutely no defense. It is not like they’ve come forward and said, oh, wait, we want to present some other evidence and the other evidence is going to show something different. They’ve done nothing.

In fact, they have done worse than nothing. What they’ve said is that you can’t hear from the witnesses who have first-hand information and you can’t get the documents that you need to see to have more evidence about what’s happening.

They are defying a court order. Remember about separation of powers? They were ordered to release documents and are refusing to do it.

So, the way I look at this is I see the evidence that is in front of us and I see the fact that they’re not putting forward any defense, and I see that they are trying to block any access to additional first-hand information.

Boy, that tells me that this is someone who has violated the law, and this is someone who needs to be held accountable.

No one is above the law, not even the president of the United States, and that is what impeachment is about.

At this point you can only say, “If they want to solely rely on the evidence presented by the impeachment articles then that’s all you have to go by and he’s clearly guilty. Put on a defense and we’ll take that into consideration.”

That’s where we are and most of the public agrees. Even a majority of Republicans think there should be witnesses.

Trump’s cult responds

Trump’s cult responds

by digby

I think Jeanne Pirro says it all:

“Thank you, Mr. President. The killing of Soleimani needed to happen, she said, and you were the man to do it.

His ruthless reign of terror both celebrated and legendary against Americans, our allies and Muslims would have continued had this monster, not been stopped.

Folks, you know, the president means what he says and says what he means. He is not interested in war. He is interested in America and protecting it. And in so doing, he will take swift, decisive and strategic action and take no prisoners along the way. Whether they’ll admit it or not, all Americans should be thankful. Our allies should be thankful. Indeed, the world should be thankful for the removal of the world’s most dangerous terrorist.”

We now have a president who negotiates from strength, not from weakness. A man who has exhibited tremendous restraint while constantly being provoked by Iran. His red line was the killing of an American. And true to his word, it was only then that he responded.”

President Trump reportedly sighed deeply, lit a cigarette and settled back into his pillows, sated and satisfied.

Not so fast, Stubby

President Donald Trump issued a string of threatening tweets Saturday evening aimed at any Iranian retaliation for his assassination-by-drone of Iranian military commander Qassim Suleimani.

“Let this serve as a WARNING,” the “short-fingered vulgarian” tapped out at his Florida golf resort, “that if Iran strikes any Americans, or American assets, we have targeted 52 Iranian sites (representing the 52 American hostages taken by Iran many years ago), some at a very high level & important to Iran & the Iranian culture, and those targets, and Iran itself, WILL BE HIT VERY FAST AND VERY HARD. The USA wants no more threats!”

The local Veterans for Peace chapter held a small anti-war rally downtown here in the cold and rain Saturday. It was one of many across the country called to protest Trump’s escalation of tensions with Iran. No doubt, some of those on the streets attended rallies on Dec. 17 calling for Trump’s impeachment.

Whatever came of impeachment, by the way? It’s almost as if by attacking Iran in Iraq and threatening to commit war crimes, Trump diverted people’s attention. Well, not so fast, Stubby.

Trump has been impeached by the House. Nothing will erase that. What remains is to see how the Senate handles a trail. For now, leaders cannot agree on how to conduct one. Taking his cues from Lewis Carroll, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell prefers to start the trial first and consider witnesses and documents later:

Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer have made zero headway on designing a bipartisan set of rules for President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial more than two weeks after their first face-to-face meeting on the matter.

The two leaders gave dueling floor speeches on Friday but held no substantive meeting. In a brief conversation on the floor, Schumer told McConnell to focus on his demands.

The Senate majority and minority leaders will have time to argue while Speaker Nancy Pelosi holds back the two articles of impeachment already passed in the House. House Democrats may add to them before sending them on to the Senate. Pelosi is unlikely to transmit anything before Trump’s State of the Union address on Feb. 4. Rapid acquittal before then by the Republican Senate majority would provide the bantam rooster a perch from which to crow.

McConnell “would prefer to sweep the entire sordid business under the rug and acquit the president as quickly as possible,” without hearing from administration witnesses, writes the New York Times Editorial Board. (Hence, Pelosi’s reluctance to hand him the instruments for doing so even as more evidence against Trump surfaces.) The Times concludes:

If Mr. Trump has nothing to hide, if his own decision to withhold Ukraine aid was based on a similar concern for the national interest, and not made for personal gain, then he should be demanding that every administration official involved in the Ukraine machinations testify under oath, in a Senate trial. And Mitch McConnell should welcome them.

Their silence only strengthens the case that the president is abusing his power.

With abusing power, abusing the law, and abusing women the only tools in his toolbox, the whole world looks to this president like the Trump Organization. Voters handing Trump the presidency in 2016 was like handing a child a loaded gun. Last week, he pulled the trigger. Last night, he threatened to target Iranian cultural sites, a clearly defined war crime.

Perhaps it was just more bullshitting, tweeted former Deputy Assistant to President Obama Colin Kahl. Surely, Department of Defense planners versed in the laws of war would not “provide Trump targeting options that include Iranian cultural sites.” Right? Right?

Pundits long predicted that at some point Trump’s behavior would rise to meet the responsibilities of his office. Any who held their breath waiting passed out long ago. Any senators failing to vote for his removal from office will pass into history in the same ignominy as the Trump presidency.

Why he did it Part III

Why he did it Part III

Somebody asked me what I meant by people getting “all gussied up” for the rapture in the post below. I was referring to the fundamentalist belief in the “bride of Christ” being a literal thing. This post from 2006 explains:

Friday, July 14, 2006

Oh Happy Day

Remember how everybody sat around discussing the horrible nihilism of Islamic Fundamentalists after 9/11? Fox news went on and on about their crazy death wish and insisted that they be renamed “homicide bombers” because they were killing innocent people in their sick desire to fulfill their bizarre religious destiny. Do you recall how everyone laughed nervously at their freakish belief that the deaths of others would result in their being granted 72 virgins and eternal life?

I know. Crazy Muslims.

Now we see the Middle East in turmoil again. We are potentially entering a terrible crisis with the stakes incredibly high. Nobody knows where it’s going and people are frightened of what might happen.

Well, not everybody… (link dead, unfortunately)

Is it time to get excited? I can’t help the way I feel. For the first time in my Christian walk, I have no doubts that the day of the Lords appearing is upon us. I have never felt this way before, I have a joy that bubbles up every-time I think of him, for I know this is truly the time I have waited for so long.

Am I alone in feeling guilty about the human suffering like my joy at his appearing some how fuels the evil I see everywhere. If it were not for the souls that hang in the balance and the horror that stalks man daily on this earth, my joy would be complete.

For those of us who await his arrival know, somehow we just know it won’t be long now, the Bridegroom cometh weather man is ready are not.

If He tarries, I will just have time to get my hair and nails done (you know let all I come into contact with know of my Bridegroom and what He has/will do).

So i am all spiffied up for Him when He does arrive to take me home. No disappointment, just a few last minute details to take care of to be more pleasing to look at.

Ok fine. Religious fundamentalists are nutty. (I’m not taking it back, Obama. It’s the plain truth.)

But what do you make of someone who writes this:

Can you imagine being a hate filled person that “preaches” tolerance but really really hates Christians when the rapture does happen. It must be sad to live like that. I feel sorry for them and feel we should pray for them. Their tolerance doesn’t include anyone but themselves, and all they preach is hate.

BTW: She has an “Ann Coulter ’08” sticker on her posts

This is why you’ll see  many conservative Christians getting excited over war in the Middle East …

Add this to the cynical self-serving reasons Trump did what he did.

The Trump cult in church

The Trump cult in church

Trump held a rally at a Florida Hispanic church on Friday, proving just how nervous they are about the rift among evangelicals over his depraved presidency:

An estimated 7,000 “supporters of faith” packed the King Jesus international ministry megachurch in Miami to hear the word of the president, and decided that it was good. The Maga hat-wearing faithful cheered Trump’s comments on issues calculated to resonate with his churchgoing audience, including abortion, freedoms of speech and religion, and what he claimed was a “crusade” from Democrats against religious tolerance.
[…]
Trump also gloated about Thursday’s military strike that took out the Iranian general Qassem Suleimani in Baghdad. “It was flawless strike that eliminated the terrorist ringleader,” he said, insisting the killing would save the lives of “hundreds and hundreds of Americans. “His atrocities have been stopped for good. He was planning a very major attack and we got him.”

Absent from his remarks, however, was any discussion of one of his signature policies, the hardline crackdown on immigration that has seen thousands of undocumented migrants deported.

Unsurprisingly, the people who showed up for the rally were not among those evangelicals who are having qualms about his leadership:

“I believe he has moral character and that he is a man of God,” said Steven Johnson, 65, from New Jersey. “I also believe that he believes people have to pick up the banner and do what’s right. If you don’t pick up the banner then are you really Christian?

“I really believe he was sent to us,” she said. “From one to ten, he’s a ten. He lives in a Christian world and we needed a strong Christian, somebody who is not afraid. He speaks for us, has the guts and courage to speak what we want to say. His actions, his intentions, are Christian.”

The speech was pretty standard Trump rally stuff, but somebody obviously told him that he had to show humility so he prefaced one of his comments with “I’m not perfect” which is jarring and strange coming from him. I don’t think I’ve ever heard him say that before.  I am positive that he will only say that in front of a conservative evangelical crowd, though. He sounded as if he was going to choke on it.

It’s more proof that they are seriously worried about keeping this faction on board. I don’t know that assassinating foreign leaders and going to war is going to get that job done but you never know. Many of them are probably getting themselves gussied up for the Rapture, but I’d guess the ones who have been objecting to his behavior aren’t among them.

So that blurry TV address wasn’t just me

So that blurry TV address wasn’t just me

I thought either my cable or my eyes were going but Brian Stelter’s newsletter explains why Trump’s news conference was all blurry yesterday:

Sometimes the little details tell you a lot about the big thing. Consider these two details about the U.S. persuasion campaign after Thursday’s drone strike took out the second most powerful leader of Iran.

First, the official Pentagon nighttime statement about the killing of Qasem Soleimani botched the name of the organization he led. The original statement called the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps the “Iranian” Corps. Obama-era State Dept official Wendy Sherman said this was a “small but telling point.”

Second, Trump’s afternoon televised address about the airstrike. It was hastily arranged, nearly 24 hours after the attack took place. The speech was fully scripted, so it obviously took time to write and set up. But the press pool traveling with the president was given very little notice ahead of time. In fact, the reporters and technicians were already at the airport, ready to head to Trump’s rally at an evangelical church in Miami.

Then they were called back to Mar-a-Lago. Many viewers noticed that the live shot of Trump’s address — carried by all the major networks — was blurry and choppy at times, and that’s because the crews had so little time to set up the transmission. It would have been in the White House’s interest to give some advanced notice. These little details raise questions about the big-picture strategy that’s unfolding…

Yes it does.

This is not a professionally run administration. We know they are political amateurs, but I think I expected their show business chops to be little bit better. They literally can’t do anything right.
