From The “You Can’t Make This Stuff Up” Files

Wow. I am gobsmacked that this person has the nerve to say this:

Amid rising starvation in the Gaza Strip, an Israeli government minister said on Thursday that Israel had no duty to alleviate hunger in the territory and was seeking to expel its population.

Amichay Eliyahu, a far-right lawmaker who leads Israel’s Heritage Ministry, said in a radio interview that “there is no nation that feeds its enemies,” adding that “the British didn’t feed the Nazis, nor did the Americans feed the Japanese, nor do the Russians feed the Ukrainians now.” He concluded that the government was “rushing toward Gaza being wiped out,” while also “driving out the population that educated its people on the ideas of ‘Mein Kampf,’” an antisemitic text written by Adolf Hitler.

The prime minister’s office had no comment which actually says everything.

Atef Abu Khater, 17, who was healthy before Gaza was gripped by war, lies in intensive care in a hospital in the north of the Palestinian enclave, suffering from severe malnutrition.

“He is not responding to the treatment,” said his father, A’eed Abu Khater, 48, who has been sheltering in a tent in Gaza City with his wife and five children. “I feel helpless,” he added in a phone call, his voice strained with grief. “We lost our income in the war. Food is unaffordable. There is nothing.”

Gaza’s hospitals have struggled since early in the war to cope with the influx of Palestinians injured and maimed by Israeli airstrikes and, more recently, by shootings meant to disperse desperate crowds as they surge toward food convoys or head to aid distribution sites.

Now, according to doctors in the territory, an increasing number of their patients are suffering — and dying — from starvation.

“There is no one in Gaza now outside the scope of famine, not even myself,” said Dr. Ahmed al-Farra, who leads the pediatric ward at Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza. “I am speaking to you as a health official, but I, too, am searching for flour to feed my family.”

We’re all just watching this happen. It feels like the world is coming apart.

South Park FTW

Rolling Stone Reports that Trump is NOT happy, not happy at all:

Donald Trump’s White House is melting down over Wednesday night’s South Park premiere, which just so happened to attack the president’s “teeny tiny” manhood and depict him as literally in bed with the devil, effectively taking over the role held on the show for years by the late genocidal dictator Saddam Hussein.

“The Left’s hypocrisy truly has no end — for years they have come after South Park for what they labeled as ‘offense’ [sic] content, but suddenly they are praising the show,” Trump White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers told Rolling Stone in a statement this morning. “Just like the creators of South Park, the Left has no authentic or original content, which is why their popularity continues to hit record lows. This show hasn’t been relevant for over 20 years and is hanging on by a thread with uninspired ideas in a desperate attempt for attention. President Trump has delivered on more promises in just six months than any other president in our country’s history — and no fourth-rate show can derail President Trump’s hot streak.”

The piece de resistance:

The episode came just hours after it was reported that Paramount had agreed to buy the global streaming rights for South Park in a five-year deal worth $1.5 billion.

Lololol.

As I said yesterday, the institutions are failing us and the only one’s willing to speak truth to power right now are the comics.

The Ghislaine Maxwell Gambit

President Trump’s former personal attorney and current Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche met yesterday with convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell at a courthouse in Palm Beach Florida. It’s highly unusual for such a high level Justice Dept. official to do such a thing but we are living in a highly usual time in which the president of the United States’s years long relationship with two sex-offenders is the subject of a roiling scandal which his own supporters suspect he is covering up.

Ghislaine Maxwell is the convicted partner in crime to the late Jeffrey Epstein, the notorious friend of the rich and famous for decades who also happened to be pedophile exploiter of underage girls and whose story we’ve all been following in detail for what seems like forever. The MAGA movement has inexplicably been demanding that all the FBI and DOJ files be released even though there has always been every reason to believe that they would implicate their own Dear Leader Donald Trump who palled around with Epstein for years. Trump and his cronies all promised to release them if he was returned to the White House and are now dancing as fast as they can to avoid doing that, which has raised suspicions even more that that something is amiss.

Maxwell is the only perpetrator in these crimes to have paid a price which makes some people see her as a scapegoat or possibly a pawn in the nefarious plans of rich and powerful men. And it’s true that she has always been something of an elusive character in this saga, a co-conspirator in a very sleazy enterprise that seems to have been partly a labor of love on her part. But she is anything but an innocent victim. Dozens of women have testified that she was a recruiter and a participant in the weird operation that she and Epstein cooked up in the early 90s and ran for more than 15 years. And those were the years that Donald Trump was Epstein’s closest wingman.

The documentary “Filthy Rich” tells the story of Ghislaine Maxwell the society girl and daughter of notorious British media mogul Robert Maxwell who doted on his daughter even as he was reputedly a violent martinet of a father. Like Donald Trump and his daughter Ivanka, Robert Maxwell often had her on his arm and bragged about her figure. According to observers, they were somewhat inappropriately affectionate, also reminiscent of Trump’s behavior with his daughter when she was young.

Ghislaine was a vivacious socialite, funny, smart and very raunchy. In the documentary, one of her acquaintances recalls her setting up a game after a dinner party in which she had all the men put scarves over their eyes while the women remove their tops and let the men fondle them, trying to guess which ones they were. The acquaintance was appalled but as happened so often in these circles, the rest didn’t bat an eye. The number of people who knew about or participated in Ghislaine’s sexcapades were legion.

Robert Maxwell died in 1991 under unusual circumstances, allegedly falling off of his massive yacht (called “Lady Ghislaine”) leaving the family nearly destitute when it was discovered that he had plundered his companies’ pension funds. Ghislaine needed money badly and apparently she also needed another relationship with a powerful man. Enter Epstein, the mysterious “financier” with plenty of money and a thirst for entry into elite circles. Maxwell was there to help with that. She knew many important people in America and Europe and she had social skills that he did not possess. They made a good team.

And apparently, they had similar sexual appetites. During the early years of their relationship when they were still a couple, one of Maxwell’s marks, a 21 year old named Liz Stein, reports in the documentary that she was working in a department story in Manhattan when she was persuaded to deliver some merchandise to the hotel where Epstein and Maxwell were staying. The two brought her up to their room where they began having sex in front of her and attempted to coerce her into joining them. She escaped what she believed was an impending assault but claimed that Ghislaine pursued her for years afterwards.

It only got weirder after that. For years Maxwell recruited and groomed mostly under-age or very young looking women to sexually exploit and abuse. And according to one witness, when asked who these people were, Maxwell replied, “they’re nothing.” She targeted runaways and girls in foster care and those who were homeless, befriending and manipulating them, giving them a couple of hundred dollars to service Epstein and his friends and sometimes offering them bigger prizes like scholarships and travel. Toward the end, she was recruiting girls to do the recruiting for her. Epstein bringing them to his private island to be violently raped was commonplace.

It was a full-blown sex-trafficking operation, not some casual pick-up at a club once in a while. And Ghislaine Maxwell was the procurer.

After Epstein died in jail awaiting trial (a suicide that will always be seen as questionable since he was the most famous prisoner in the country) Ghislaine went on the run. She was finally found hiding out in a country estate in New Hampshire and she was indicted on multiple counts of conspiracy to traffic minors for illegal sex acts. A number of her victims testified against her at trial and she was found guilty. She’s currently serving a 20 year sentence.

However, in their desperation to put this scandal behind them, Todd Blanche’s trip to see her this week indicates that they may be ready to make some kind of a deal if she is willing to exonerate Trump and/or implicate his political enemies. The MAGA influencers have no problem with that:

Others are saying right up front that Maxwell is a victim herself:

One of the prosecutors in Maxwell’s case was Maureen Comey, the daughter of James Comey who was recently fired for no reason by Attorney General Pam Bondi. It’s fair to assume that if a deal is made, Trump and his henchmen will say that Maxwell was railroaded by Comey to cover for crimes by Democrats who were out to get Trump. Or something like that. It really doesn’t have to make much sense. Virtually nothing does these days.

But there is no guarantee that that would be the end of it either. You know what they always say whenever there’s a major political scandal: it’s not the crime, it’s the cover-up. And this may be the sloppiest cover-up in American history.

Starving Children

A manmade disaster in Gaza

I know and apologize for there being only so much public and personal bandwidth. There are serious matters going unaddressed while we attempt to keep the country from collapsing into autocracy. Israel’s starvation campaign in Gaza is a big one.

Mass starvation stalks Gaza as deaths from hunger rise

After four months of a near-total Israeli siege, Gaza’s few remaining hospitals now have wards for the growing number of malnourished children whose tiny bodies are just the width of their bones.

Doctors are famished to the point that they have dizzy spells as they make their rounds, medics say, and the journalists documenting their caseloads are often too weak to even walk to the clinics.

Gazans Are Dying of Starvation

Atef Abu Khater, 17, who was healthy before Gaza was gripped by war, lies in intensive care in a hospital in the north of the Palestinian enclave, suffering from severe malnutrition.

“He is not responding to the treatment,” said his father, A’eed Abu Khater, 48, who has been sheltering in a tent in Gaza City with his wife and five children. “I feel helpless,” he added in a phone call, his voice strained with grief. “We lost our income in the war. Food is unaffordable. There is nothing.”

Things got heated last night as a CNN panel discussed the crisis.

Amid the finger-pointing, the United Nations “says Israeli authorities are the ‘sole decision-makers’ on who, and how much, aid enters Gaza, as well as the type of supplies that are allowed in,” The Washington Post reports:

“Once inside Gaza, movement requires navigating an obstacle course of coordination with Israeli forces, through active hostilities, traveling on damaged roads, and often being forced to wait at holding points or pass through areas controlled by criminal gangs,” U.N. relief chief Tom Fletcher told the U.N. Security Council in New York last week. When vehicles do make it through, he said, starving people often try to grab flour from the backs of the trucks.

Gaza’s ability to make its own food has been almost entirely destroyed as Israeli military operations have wiped out farmlands and factories. As the summer heat bears down, hungry and thirsty civilians have run out of reserves to fall back on.

Palestinians in the enclave are reliant instead on humanitarian aid that most people under Israel’s new system cannot easily access. According to local health authorities, more than 1,000 people have been shot dead as they raced through territory controlled by the Israeli military toward distribution points run by U.S. security contractors, where supplies are first-come, first-served.

Chef José Andrés speaks out as World Central Kitchen forced to pause cooking in Gaza

World Central Kitchen has been forced to once again suspend cooking in Gaza due to a lack of ingredients, the food aid organization said Sunday.

In a joint social media post with its founder Chef José Andrés, the not-for-profit humanitarian group said it had “run out of food in Gaza.”

“We have finished all the stock in hand, and our trucks are stuck at the border,” WCK wrote in an Instagram caption. “We are continuing to bake bread and deliver water. But the people of Gaza still need a hot meal. Yesterday, we served 80,000+ meals — and we are ready to start cooking again the moment that aid trucks make it safely to our field kitchens.”

Lifesaving food for starving children in Gaza to run out by mid-August, warn UN agencies

I just can’t.

Coverup On Pennsylvania Avenue

“Handling” Trump’s Epstein problem

Donald Trump hasn’t shot anyone in the middle of Fifth Avenue yet. But he has no bottom. He’s conspiring to release convicted sex offender, Ghislaine Maxwell, from prison while he’s parked behind a desk on Pennsylvania Avenue. If it serves his purposes — in this case, getting the Wall Street Journal to stop publishing Trump-Epstein stories — nothing is beneath Donald Trump.

Marcy Wheeler has been studying this gambit, and constructed a timeline. Trump has dispatched his former(?) personal attorney, Todd Blanche, under color of his government position as Deputy AG and on the pretext of “uncovering the truth,” to cut a deal with Epstein’s “girl moll.” Blanche clearly wants Maxwell to exonerate Trump from involvement with Epstein’s sex crimes. Trump wants that stink Servproed like it never happened.

Wheeler wrote on Tuesday:

And today, Trump’s Defense Attorney Todd Blanche announces he will meet with Maxwell soon to make the kind of deal that could excuse releasing her early. Probably, he’ll ask her to implicate someone like Bill Clinton.

Absent that deal, it seems clear, the WSJ will continue to publish stories implicating the President in Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking.

Blanche met with Maxwell for about five hours on Thursday and expects to continue the interview today. NBC reported on Thursday’s meeting:

David Oscar Markus, Maxwell’s attorney and a friend of Blanche, said Maxwell had a “productive day” with Blanche and “answered every single question” asked of her, declining to invoke privilege at any time.

“Ghislaine honestly answered every question that Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche asked,” Markus told reporters.

The two attorneys are personal friends? That’s mighty cozy. And exactly what questions about whom did Maxwell answer “honestly” and decline “to invoke privilege at any time”? About whom did Blanche not ask questions? Is there video of the questioning?

Trump is looking for a twofer from Maxwell in exchange for a pardon or commutation. He wants to hand his slavering MAGA-QAnon base details to prove that, yes, as they always believed, DEMONCRATS were involved in Epstein’s sex trafficking of young girls while their savior was just an innocent bystander. They want to see Bill Clinton implicated, and who knows who else.

As if Democrats care.

Josh Marshall is amazed at Trump’s transparent attempt to kill the Epstein stories:

I’m filled with awe and amazement that they seem primed to pardon ghislaine in exchange for her signing a statement that Trump is the least pedophilest man ever to walk the earth and was 100% never Jeff Epstein’s wingman with high school age models.

Josh Marshall (@joshtpm.bsky.social) 2025-07-24T21:37:09.694Z

Ghislaine Maxwell is 63 and scheduled to be released from prison when she’s 80. Trump appears to be offering her the chance to walk out of jail this summer for a life on the French Riviera in exchange for exonerating him on Jeff Epstein. Any guesses?

Josh Marshall (@joshtpm.bsky.social) 2025-07-24T22:28:56.994Z

Team Trump’s frenzied attempts to change the subject from Epstein have become comical. His attempt on Thursday to smear Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell with cost overruns in renovations to two of the reserve’s buildings fizzled spectacularly. And on camera.

Lawrence O’Donnell spent a long segment on the Trump-Epstein coverup on Thursday night that includes Blache and Markus yucking it up in a podcast about Blanche losing the Trump felony trial.

This circus isn’t leaving town anytime soon.

Update: To review.

Trump Deals Aren’t Worth The Paper They’re Printed On

She kind of gives the game away, doesn’t she?

Columbia University has agreed to allow the Trump administration to basically run it. I can’t imagine anything more daft, but that’s where they are. A professor at the university makes an excellent point in the NYT today. Even if you think that this “deal” is acceptable, you have to know that he will never abide by it if he doesn’t want to:

In 1672, Charles II unilaterally suspended repayment of 1.2 million pounds to London’s private bankers. Having run up this debt, and unable to finance a flotilla of ships to fight the Dutch, Charles became neither the first nor the last absolute monarch to break his word. James II, his sibling successor, went further, claiming royal prerogative to bypass laws and purge Protestant judges, generals and functionaries. The solemn oaths he made at his coronation, to respect Parliament and the Church of England, wound up being worth not very much.

James ruled for less than four years, deserting after the Glorious Revolution began the era of parliamentary supremacy. Parliament would approve only those loans it would be willing to pay back with taxes, enabling deals with creditors now willing to lend. By restraining the monarch’s power, it enabled the crown to make deals it couldn’t otherwise get.

In economic history, we teach the 1688 creation of parliamentary supremacy as a solution to what economists call “commitment problems.” In the absence of a third party sufficiently strong to make sure all sides stick to their promises, the powerful can renege on the powerless. The powerless, seeing this, wisely choose to not contract with the powerful. Absolutist rulers are victims of their own lack of restraints; a sovereign who is too powerful cannot get inexpensive credit, because nothing stops the ruler from defaulting on any bond. President Trump, by smashing checks on his authority, has wound up undermining his own ability to make credible deals, including the one just reached with Columbia University, where I teach.

The entities that have been striking deals with Mr. Trump, my own employer included, have not learned the lessons of the Glorious Revolution. Trade negotiators from longtime partner countries, government contractors, law firms, federal employees, permanent residents, the Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell, even the Transportation Security Administration labor union are all experiencing contractual vertigo, finding out that the administration will not honor previous agreements.

He has never abided by any contract and he admits it. If he “doesn’t like” the job they did he refuses to pay, tells them to sue and then agrees to pay pennies on the dollar. He cannot be counted on to abide by any of these agreements either. He’s already torn up a bnch of treaties. His tariff scheme is full of broken promises. If anything he’ll make an example of Columbia (and the EU or Japan etc.) by reneging just to show he can.

There is no margin in appeasing this monster but it appears they’re going to do it anyway. The system is completely breaking down — scientific research is being throttled at his whim and as the brain damaged Education Secretary inappropriately blurted out, Republicans are achieving their real goals: the destruction of liberalism in higher education. In the process they are destroying higher education itself.

The People Aren’t Buying It

The NYT explains why Trump seems so crispy:

The Trump administration’s recent decision to backtrack on releasing new details about the investigation into the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein has prompted something exceedingly rare: Republican voters have begun to break with the president.

Mr. Trump has long engendered unwavering loyalty from his followers, who tend to shrug off even his most extreme controversies. But recent public polling suggests even such fervent support may have a limit.

While 40 percent of Republicans approve of Mr. Trump’s handling of the release of the files on Mr. Epstein, more than a third of them — 36 percent — disapprove, according to a poll from Quinnipiac University. That is perhaps the most intraparty discontent Mr. Trump has experienced as president.

Nearly two-thirds of Americans overall disapprove of the Trump administration’s handling of the case, according to the Quinnipiac poll.

Indeed, the Epstein files have led to one of the most unified moments in recent political history. According to recent polling from CBS News and YouGov, nearly 90 percent of Americans — including 83 percent of Republicans — think the Department of Justice should release all the information it has regarding the case against Mr. Epstein, who died by suicide in 2019 while in jail awaiting trial on charges that he had sex-trafficked teenage girls.

We know that Bondi told Trump he was in these files back in May. I think it’s fair to assume that if his appearance in them was innocent they wouldn’t have decided to hold them back. It’s always possible that he’s covering up for a friend but you’d think we would have heard something like that by now. Besides, when has Trump ever cared about anyone but himself?

Maybe Ghislaine will be able to help:

The meeting between Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche and Maxwell is occurring in downtown Tallahassee at the U.S. attorney’s office, which is located inside the federal courthouse, sources familiar with the matter said.

Maxwell was convicted of sex trafficking and other charges and sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2022. She is serving her sentence at a federal prison in Tallahassee.

Blanche arrived at the federal courthouse around 9 a.m. ET. He shook his head and said “no” when asked if he had anything to say ahead of his meeting with Maxwell.

Maxwell’s attorneys were also seen entering the federal courthouse in Tallahassee.

“We’re looking forward to a productive day,” David O. Markus, Maxwell’s appellate lawyer, told ABC News. He declined further comment.

I’m sure.

Right Wingers Feeling Their Oats

They’re just saying it right out loud:

In her entire law career, Sarah McCracken has never seen anything like the email she received on June 25.

McCracken, a tenants’ rights lawyer at Tobener Ravenscroft, is currently representing a Latino family suing a landlord and real estate agent for illegal eviction after being kicked out of their Baldwin Park home last year.

A few weeks after being served, amid a series of ICE raids primarily targeting Latino communities in L.A. County, Rod Fehlman, the lawyer who appeared to be representing the agent at the time, sent McCracken’s team a series of emails disputing the lawsuit and urging them to drop the case.

He ended the correspondence with this: “It is also interesting to note that your clients are likely to be picked up by ICE and deported prior to trial thanks to all the good work the Trump administration has done in regards to immigration in California.”

Apparently, anyone with a Latino last name is now considered to be deportable by right wing assholes like this. They are American citizens, born and bred.

The comment arrived as ICE raises tensions between landlords and Latino tenants. According to California Atty. Gen. Rob Bonta, ICE has been pressuring some landlords to report their tenants’ immigration status…

McCracken said Fehlman’s message is a byproduct of the current anti-immigrant political environment. Fehlman sent the email on June 25, the end of a jarring month that saw the agency arrest 2,031 people across seven counties in Southern California, 68% of which had no criminal convictions.

“People seem to be emboldened to flout the law because they see people at the top doing it,” she said. “It’s totally unacceptable behavior.”

If only it really was unacceptable.

“The Field Is Getting Very Limited”

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said in a 1999 interview that he once promised his daughter Ivanka he’d never date a girl younger than her.

Ivanka Trump would have been 17 in 1999, when Trump made the claim to radio host Howard Stern, according to the New York Daily News.

“I have a deal with her. She’s 17 and doing great ― Ivanka. She made me promise, swear to her that I would never date a girl younger than her,” Trump said. “So as she grows older, the field is getting very limited.”

Trump was 53 at the time.

The Dream Of The 50s — The 1850s

Last Thursday, at a town hall in Jonesborough, Tennessee, a 35-year-old woman shared her story: she was denied prenatal care by her physician because they objected to the fact that she wasn’t married, nor did she plan to be. She’d been with her partner for 15 years and they have a 13-year-old child.

While going through her medical history, the physician told her that because she was unwed, they didn’t feel comfortable treating her, because it went against their values and she should seek care elsewhere. At the time of the appointment, the woman believed she was about four weeks into her pregnancy.

Why is this happening now?

On April 24th, Tennessee’s 2025 Medical Ethics Defense Act went into effect. It gives physicians, hospital systems and insurers, among others, the legal right to deny healthcare to patients based on religious, moral or ethical beliefs. There are no protections for people in rural areas with limited options. There’s no requirement to refer patients elsewhere. And there’s no legal recourse. The woman at the town hall explained that her representatives are not responsive to her questions, even as she repeatedly calls Sen. Marsha Blackburn. When she reached staff at Sen. Bill Hagerty’s office, they told her, “he’s not obligated to listen to his constituents.”

This does not surprise me. 21st century ethics pretty much come down to “people with power can inflict their values on anyone they damn well please” and that means women, people of color, immigrants, the usual. We’re making America great again, one atrocity at a time.

Read the whole story by the Nashville Banner. It includes an interview with the woman in question.
