The MAGA twins, Marco and JD, met with the Danes today:
Denmark, Greenland and the United States have a “fundamental disagreement” over the future of the territory in the North Atlantic, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, the Danish foreign minister, said on Wednesday after a meeting with top Trump administration officials.
The meeting in Washington — hours after President Trump said the United States “needs Greenland” — was the first among the three governments to discuss Mr. Trump’s desire to buy or take the semiautonomous Danish territory.
Mr. Rasmussen and Vivian Motzfeldt, the Greenland foreign minister, met with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Afterward, Mr. Rasmussen called the discussion “frank” and “constructive” even as he underscored that Denmark has no interest in changing the status quo. “Our perspectives continue to differ,” he said. “The president has made his view clear. And we have a different position.”
[…]
Mr. Trump has turned up the pressure on Greenland this year, apparently emboldened by the success of the U.S. military operation that led to the capture of Venezuela’s leader on Jan. 3. He said last week that he was “going to do something on Greenland, whether they like it or not.”
He repeated his claims hours before the closed-door meeting, saying that “anything less than” American control of Greenland would be “unacceptable,” in a post on Truth Social. “The United States needs Greenland,” he said, renewing his argument that it was necessary for national security. “NATO becomes far more formidable and effective with Greenland in the hands of the UNITED STATES.”
So that went well.
I’m not sure I believe Trump really intends to take over Greenland. He might. In fact, he probably does since he’s saying that he won’t accept anything less and he’s incapable of ever backing off anything he says. But it’s also true that he believes that all he has to do is threaten anyone who crosses him to get what he wants. (You can understand that — just look at the GOP and most of the institutions in America.) His “art of the deal” is just to say “my way or the highway” and expect his adversaries to simply give over. If they don’t (as we’ve seen with Ukraine) he flounders around but doesn’t actually pull the trigger.
Again, he may just mean it and we’ll see an invasion of Greenland and the destruction of NATO and all of our alliances. It’s totally possible. But even if he backs off, in the process he will have rearranged the world order in ways that we cannot predict and it’s highly likely that it will not be to America’s benefit. He’s a very stupid, out-of-control, elderly, egomaniac with massive power. This could go sideways very easily.
By the way:

- Germany will deploy 13 soldiers to Greenland for a short (reconnaissance mission with other European partners at Denmark’s request to assess ways to strengthen regional security (e.g., maritime surveillance), as European allies respond to President Trump’s renewed push for US control of the island.
- France will send troops to Greenland as part of a European security mission requested by Denmark, aiming to support regional stability and signal opposition to President Trump’s renewed threats to take control of the strategically important Arctic island.
- Denmark made the following statement on its website today:

Meanwhile, make of this what you will:
